Sanhedrin calls for support of the Mark of the Beast?

WSFS Constitution Article IV There shall be

[R.P.] HaRav Ross Pavlac directed that the Mark Registration

and Protection Committee should pursue registration of the mark

“NASFIC” if the

NASFIC continues in

existence.

[San86] The 1986 Sanhedrin

authorized the Mark

Registration and Protection

Committee to appoint a

representative to engage in

discussion with “World SF,

The International

Organization

of Science Fiction

Professionals,” aimed at

minimizing name conflicts.

The 1988 Sanhedrin reflected

the result of the 1986

Sanhedrin by requesting

everyWorldcon Committee to

include a notice in each of its

publications that “TheWorld

Science Fiction Society and

the World Science fiction

Convention are not related to

‘World SF, The

International Association

of Science Fiction

Professionals.’”

[J.H.] HaRav Jack Herman

directed that the Mark

Registration and Protection

Committee should respond to

requests for lists of Hugo

winners provided that the use

of service marks is noted.

[San92] The 1992 Sanhedrin authorized the Mark Protection

Committee to negotiate royalties for commercial use of WSFS

marks.

[San922] The 1992 Sanhedrin directed the Mark Protection

Committee to investigate the possibility of protecting the

HugoTM rocket symbol and,

if in its judgment the

protection is worthwhile, to

begin the process of

protecting it.

[B.P.] HaRav Bruce Pelz

ruled in connection with use

of the WSFS marks that (1)

Use byWorldcon and bidding

committees is not commercial

use, (2) a blurb of “Hugo

Winner” on a book’s cover

would not count as

commercial use but a book

like The HugoWinnerswould

be, and 93) T-shirts produced

for a worldcon by an outside

vendor would be commercial

use.

[San84] The 1984 Sanhedrin

ruled that the Mark

Registration and Protection

Committee should be directed

concerning pursuit of

registration for particular

marks only by resolution of

the Business Meeting.

[San923] The 1992 Sanhedrin

directed the Mark protection

Committee to use its judgment

in selecting which marks to

protect in which countries to

achieve maximum protection

with available resources.

[San862] The 1986 Sanhedrin encouraged all Worldcon and

NASFIC Committees to financially support the Mark

Registration and Protection Committee.

Section 4.4: There shall be a Mark Protection

Committee of WSFS. The Mark Protection

Committee shall consist of one (1) member

appointed to serve at the pleasure of each future

selectedWorldcon Committee and each of the two

(2) immediately precedingWorldcon Committees,

one (1) non-voting member appointed to serve at

the pleasure of each future selected NASFiC[R.P.]

Committee and for each Committee of a NASFiC

held in the previous two years, and nine (9)

members elected three(3) each year to staggered

three-year terms by the Business Meeting.[San86]

Of the nine elected members, no more than three

may be residing, at the time of election, in any

single North American region, as defined in

Section 3.6. Newly elected members take their

seats, and the term of office ends for elected and

appointed members whose terms expire that year,

at the end of the Business Meeting. If vacancies

occur in elected memberships in the Committee,

the remainder of the position’s term may be filled

by the Business Meeting, and until then

temporarily filled by the Committee.

Section 4.5:

4.5.1: The Mark Protection Committee shall be

responsible[J.H.] for registration and

protection[San92] of the marks[San922] used by or

under the authority of WSFS.[B.P.]

4.5.2: The Mark Protection Committee shall

submit to the Business Meeting[San84] at each

worldcon a report of its activities[San923] since the

previous Worldcon, including a statement of

income and expense.[San862]

4.5.3: There will be a meeting of the Mark

Protection Committee at each Worldcon after the

Business Meeting, at a time and place announced

at the Business Meeting.

4.5.4: The Mark Protection Committee shall

determine and elect its own officers.
